I am also shocked about Nigeria catching up on us, maybe its a good thing for it might shift the focus from drug tracking to our country.

I admit I was a bit shocked to learn that in some ways Nigeria is ahead of us with getting an independent space program up and running. But on reflection I think we should be less concerned with losing our lead and rather we can afford to be pleased that there is more competition, which leads to more progress.

As long as we rest on our laurels we won't achieve anything, so many thanks to Nigeria for giving us a kick in the pants. I suspect that their progress is part of our government's motivation for starting SANSA. I mean we wouldn't want to fall too far behind, we want to be first in Africa in all things, South Africans are irritating that way :)

I have to admit I was pleasantly surprized to discover that Nigeria is working on a Space program. This is good news for the continent.

Hi Ben,

I believe other African countries are more concerned with survival at this stage. You have to be in a certain financial state to be able to redirect resources to a 'non-essential' sector.

Our organisation, SAASA, is set to eventually launch a satellite on a locally built Satellite Launch Vechile (SLV). Currently, we are working on roadmap to space. First 10km, then 100km which is officially into space. Once we reach space, we can work on a vechile to orbit the earth.

What we need is financial backing for the projects. We can be reached via our website.

I'm really excited about South Africa's leaps and bounds in the area of space technology. I'm just curious why other African countries are not among the ranks.
