With a master’s in geography from the University of Kansas (USA), he has worked at the National Center for Geographic Information (Portugal) and at the Portuguese Geographic Institute, researching land use and land cover mapping using satellite imagery and developing integrated forest fire risk methods. Current research activities include feature extraction from very high resolution satellite imagery for urban planning, and improving risk mapping and assessment through modeling of disaggregated spatio-temporal population distribution.

During his ever-decreasing free time he enjoys sailing, Sunday basketball on the playground, and introducing his baby daughter to the pleasures of biking and sea kayaking. He lives just outside Lisbon with his wife and daughter.

Population Reallocation Methods to Support Emergency Evacuation Planning

Image of cartoon cityscapeThe U.S. Census, first conducted in 1790, was devised to count the residential population for the purpose of Congressional representation. Today the census data are being used for disaster management planning. It wasn’t until the 2000 census that night-time and daytime populations were reported. In this article David Haynes and Marc P. Armstrong explain their method for creating time-based population distribution.
