Straw Bale Building – Reaching Energy Efficiency and Sustainability In Northern Latitudes

Cropped image of straw bale sauna. The sustainable building practice of using bales of straw to construct super-insulating walls is winning adherents in northern Europe. This article describes the status of current straw bale building in the project “Promotion of Straw Bale Building for Climate Change Mitigation” and presents countries, advantages and methods of building with straw. Straw bale construction originated in Nebraska, USA in the late 1800s but has seen resurgence in popularity over the last few years due in large part to its low cost and significant energy savings.

Large X-class Flare Erupts on the Sun

Large X-class Flare Erupts on the Sun

On Jan. 27, 2012, a large X-class flare erupted from an active region near the solar west limb. X-class flares are the most powerful of all solar events. Seen here is an image of the flare captured by the X-ray telescope on Hinode. This image shows an emission from plasma heated to greater than eight million degrees during the energy release process of the flare. Image Credit: JAXA/Hinode
