Racing yachts and their competitive sailors are the laboratories and citizen scientists being tapped to collect and validate data from the ocean-atmosphere interface for scientific projects by The OceanoScientific® Programme. In the past, racing yachts have been equipped with scientific sensors, but the possibilities were always very limited because of the competition and onboard conditions. In 2006, the French Sailing Federation (FFVoile) launched the SolOceans race, which from the beginning combined the sportive aspects of a sailing race in the Southern Ocean with the scientific need for data.
